Presidentīs Letter, April 2008
As I prepared my 11 year old son for his first day of school, we started talking about his future and the great things he can accomplish if he puts his mind to it. After reflecting on our conversation, my son stared at me as he whispered: Dad, what future? What about global warming?

US investment in Latin America is calculated at US$353 Billion, and exports of goods of services from Panama to the US represent more than 40% of Panamas total exports. Increasing trade and investment between Panama and the US, the biggest market on earth, will certainly make for a more robust economy impacting the quality of life.

Presidentīs Letter, February 2008
Panama is developing rapidly. Last year our growth went above 10%, and we expect significant growth to happen consistently in the years to come. Visitors to our country are always amazed at the view they have; particularly, if they have not been in Panama for a while or if they have not been in Panama at all. Panama is truly the place to be, and this is the time for big opportunities. With that steady and significant growth come important decisions to make. We need to re-visit our planning for the future. The growth we experience goes beyond our optimistic projections of past years.

Presidentīs Letter, September 2007
The real estate collapse in the United States has been of concern to the large number of Panamanians that own homes and apartments in the US. In Panama, construction is booming, materials are becoming scarce and prices are rising rapidly. But the system is basically sound. The majority of projects is viable and will come to fruition.

Presidentīs Letter, August 2007
President Martín Torrijos called the National Assembly of Panama into Extraordinary Session on (appropriately) July 4 to consider the Panama-US TPA. On July 11, the Assembly voted overwhelmingly, 58-4, to approve the agreement, sending the strongest signal to the US Congress that Panama was ready to move bilateral commercial relations to the next level.
It is now up to the US Government to acknowledge this commitment and reciprocate.

Presidentīs Letter, June 2007
We are coming to the final stages of the negotiations for a Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA) between the United States and Panama, but there is a lot still to be done. While it now appears that there is an agreement between the Democratic Congress and Republican Administration in the US over the issues of labor, the environment and intellectual property, permitting President Bush to sign the PTPA on June 28th, experience tells us that we will have to keep up the pressure to make sure that the naysayers do not get the upper hand. This will require a consistent lobbying effort in Washington over the next several months.

We have just been through a whirlwind first quarter in 2007. For the first time, we had a net increase in membership during the first quarter of the year. Board members traveled to Miami for the February AACCLA reunion, and turned around the next week to help host a reception and luncheon at the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington for the President of Panama, sponsored by AmCham members. The Deputy US Trade Representative visited Panama and spoke at an AmCham reception. In all, we held eight events, one of them the first of five trade missions already programmed to visit us during the year--a record.
